Life-size marine art
in public places
Perhaps the best way to teach someone about environmental conservation is to simply show them what they are
conserving. The Wyland Foundation's Whaling Wall murals have been raising environmental awareness about our
undersea world for over twenty years.
These 91 monumental life-size depictions of migrating gray whales, breaching humpbacks,
blue whales, and other marine life are viewed by an estimated 1 billion people each year, and have become treasured
landmarks in cities from Chicago to Nice to Auckland.
Most importantly, the murals have helped reshape attitudes about
marine life conservation. Take the case of "24-Hour Television" in Japan, which broadcast the creation of a Wyland
mural in Sinjuku Station during a live telethon in 1990. Wyland's environmental message during the marathon painting
session helped raise $70 million for conservation efforts in Japan. All costs for the mural projects are underwritten
by the Wyland Foundation, Sponsers and Wyland's time is donated. But none of the murals would be possible without community
support, corporate donations, and the hard work of volunteers. Click here for a list of sponsors.
Imagine rounding a corner in a landlocked urban downtown and coming face to face with a family of humpback whales on
the side of a 26-story hotel.
The impact of such an encounter is extraordinary, especially for anyone who's never
seen a picture of a whale anywhere but in a book or on television. All of the Wyland Foundation's Whaling Wall murals
are painted in life-size dimensions to help people understand and appreciate the true scale of these magnificent
creatures.
The foundation's mural projects can be found in 70 cities throughout the United States, Europe, Australia,
New Zealand, Mexico, and Japan.
Wyland intends to have painted 100 murals by the year 2008. Among the locations that
prominently display the murals are the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., the Long Beach Convention Center (California),
and the New Zealand National Maritime Museum. The Long Beach wall, which was named the world's largest mural by the
Guinness Book of World Records in 1992, covers three acres and required 7,000 gallons of paint.
The average Whaling Wall mural takes more than 1,000 gallons of paint to complete. All totaled, the art covers more than 64
million square feet, but Wyland doesn't limit his "canvasses" to walls.
He has also painted these murals on ceilings,
roofs, even the sides of boats. "Wyland has turned the side of an ugly power generation station into a spectacular
scene," says renowned marine biologist Dr. Roger Payne. "And he's transformed a convention center that looked like a
gas storage tank into the world's largest mural. Now that's progress." The Wyland Foundation is currently considering
sites for murals in Russia, Germany, China, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, India, Africa, Taiwan, Korea,
Switzerland, Egypt, Israel, South America, England, and Norway.
